MUSKEGON, Michigan, March 27, 2019 – MCC Lakeshore Fitness Center and United Way of the Lakeshore offers a FREE fitness program for honorably discharged Veterans called Workout Warriors.
Workout Warriors was started with the Veterans’ system of care navigator in Muskegon County, Robert Near. Robert wanted to connect Veterans to an effective exercise program to help improve their physical and mental health. The United Way of the Lakeshore has already funded 20 Veterans to go through this program. Now, 15 more veterans can take advantage of the Next Steps Fitness Programs™.
“I started the Next Steps Fitness Programs™to help lower my BMI to be able to have my knees replaced,” said United States Navy and Army veteran Mike W. “As a veteran, United Way paid for this program. The MCC Lakeshore Fitness staff was top shelf from start to finish. They handled contacting United Way to get the funding for the program, set up a schedule that was convenient and worked with me through it all. Working with Eric and Patrick, I was shown several exercises that helped me to achieve my goal. I found the program so helpful that I am doing another one for pre-surgery prep. I highly recommend this for any vet.”
Next Steps Fitness Programs™ is a collection of 8-week medical fitness programs that will help you safely and effectively reach your fitness goals. Participants in the program experience many benefits such as assessments at the beginning and end of the program, an individualized exercise plan, two 60-minute supervised group workout sessions per week and more.
“I started the Next Steps Fitness Programs™for Veterans in October 2017, and I want you to know that I was in pretty bad shape, but at the end of the 8 – 10 weeks, I found that my energy began to take off, ” said United States Army veteran Susan V. “From the program, I lost 4lbs. of fat and also discovered that I began to gain muscle. To ALL fellow veterans: If you want to lose all civvy flab, come down to the Lakeshore Fitness Center, and they will help you get in shape!”
Morgan Kantola was recognized by the Medical Fitness Association with an Honorable Mention for the 2018 Program Innovation Award for her work with this program. She will receive the award at the MFA annual conference in New Orleans this November.
