MCC Lakeshore Fitness Center and United Way of the Lakeshore offers a FREE fitness program for honorably discharged Veterans. The program Workout Warriors was started with the Veterans’ system of care navigator in Muskegon County, Robert Near. Robert wanted to connect Veterans to an effective exercise program to help improve their physical and mental health.
“When I joined the Veteran Next Steps™ program, I realized it was very professionally done by the trainers and I thoroughly enjoyed the pre-assessment and when the trainers created a program/workout that fit my needs. No matter what trainer I went to, they did an excellent job with helping me out. Throughout my training I would continue to ask for an intense session and they would give me what I could handle. At the end of the two months, I was gaining back my confidence and started to feel young again. This program lead into my membership at the gym to continue with my journey and I could really feel the difference. I’m very thankful for the Next Steps™ program and wish more veterans would take advantage of it.” -Randy Thompson.
The United Way of the Lakeshore originally agreed to fund the first 10 Veterans to go through Next Steps™ Fitness Programs. After the United Way of the Lakeshore reviewed data from the initial 10 Veterans, they agreed to fund an additional 10 Veterans to go through Next Steps™.
Next Steps™ is a collection of 8-week medical fitness programs that will help you safely and effectively reach your fitness goals. Participants in the program experience many benefits such as, assessments at the beginning and end of program, an individualized exercise plan, two 60-minute supervised group workout sessions per week and more.
“I started the Next Steps™ Program for Veterans in October 2017, and I want you to know that I was in pretty bad shape, but at the end of the 8 – 10 weeks, I found that my energy began to take off. From the program I lost 4lbs. of fat and discovered that I began to gain muscle. To ALL fellow veterans: If you want to lose all civvy flab, come down to the Lakeshore Fitness Center, and they will help you get in shape!” -Susan Vandenberg United States Army.
Morgan Kantola, Medical Integration Coordinator at the Lakeshore Fitness Center was recognized by the Medical Fitness Association with an Honorable Mention for the 2018 Program Innovation Award for her work with this program. She received the award at the MFA annual conference in New Orleans on November 8th.
